The entire 4,000-strong workforce at Brodosplit Shipyard in Split, Croatia, are set to go on strike next week over government plans for the privatisation of the country"s shipyards.

The Union of Metal Industry Workers, which called the strike - planned for next Monday ? said the move came after the government made public its final plan for the privatisation of Croatia"s major shipyards.

Zvonko Segvic, president of the Independent Union in Brodosplit Shipyard, said: ?The strike will be held from 1030 hrs to 1500 hrs. Workers will remain in the shipyard but will not work.? The strike will be followed by a solidarity rally held by other national unions in support of the workers and in protest at the government"s plans for the shipbuilding industry, local media reported.

The union has called on the government to change the conditions of sale of the yard to make sure that shipbuilding continues. They said that it was concerned the government"s privatisation plan for Croatian shipyards would be carried out with no guarantee that the new owners would have to continue with shipbuilding.
