STX Turku workers stage strike.
WORKERS at STX Europe"s Turku shipyard are reported to have walked out on strike until next Monday.
A Turku based newspaper has reported that the workers are protesting about the shipyard owners decision to make up to 430 people redundant.
Turku Shipyard has only one newbuilding vessel on its books, The Allure of the Seas, which will be delivered to Royal Caribbean Lines later this year.
The Turku yard employs about 2,300 staff and subcontractors. It announced the redundancies earlier in the month, adding there is the possibility of further redundancies if no new orders were received.
STX Europe, which is owned by Korea"s STX Group, has three yards in Finland, with another two at Rauma and Helsinki. As well as restructuring operations it said it is still actively looking for new orders, including in the specialised vessel sectors in which it has had some past experience.
A spokesman for the workers is quoted in Finnish newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet as saying the workers can not understand why a portion of the outfitting work for the cruiseship has been moved to an external company while the yard is laying off its own personnel.
