Petróleos de Venezuela SA. (PDVSA) has taken delivery of the South Korean-built 72,000-barrel capacity Petion to move crude from Venezuela to a Cuban refinery, Platts reported.
According to Sea-Web, however, Petion is a double-hulled 72,714 dwt oil tanker capable of carrying more than 300,000 barrels. It is built by Samsung in 2006.
The registered owner of the Panama-flagged tanker as of January 29 was Trocana World Inc.
The Petion is slated to move crude from the Puerto La Cruz refinery in eastern Venezuela to the Camilo Cienfuegos refinery in south-central Cuba.
The tanker's new operators Transportes del ALBA is said to be a 50:50 joint venture between PDVSA and Cuba's Internacional Maritima SA.
Delivery of another similar-sized tanker is apparently slated for March, the JV was quoted saying.
The Camilo Cienfuegos refinery, which boasts a production capacity of about 65,000 barrels per day, is also a JV project between the state oil players of Venezuela and Cuba.
