The port of Fujairah has called time on the use of single hull tankers of less than 600 deadweight tonnes (dwt) as lube oil barges at Fujairah Port & Offshore Anchorage.
According to a circular from the GAC shipping agency, the port has called for such lube oil barges to cease operations by the end of 2009.
"Accordingly, from 1 January 2010 all lube oil barges based in Fujairah for supplying lube oil at Fujairah Port and Fujairah Offshore Anchorage Area must be double hulled," GAC said.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) became a signatory to the MARPOL convention in October 2006 and has said it will follow International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations on the phase-out of single hull tankers.
In September last year, an official from the UAE's Marine Affairs Department at the National Transport Authority (NTA) said that no single-hull tankers would be allowed to trade in the UAE after 2010.
According to the IMO regulation, single hull tankers in the 600 to 5,000 dwt range can no longer be used for transport of heavy grade oil. This is the size range most commonly used as bunker barges.
The Fujairah Port Authority has also advised that it does not accept single hull tankers older than 25 years to call at the Port of Fujairah and the Fujairah Offshore Anchorage Area.
