Castrol is to open a lubricants technology centre in China this year.

The new facility will be dedicated to developing lubricant technology solutions across various businesses, including marine and offshore, in China and supporting Chinese businesses that operate overseas.

The centre will be located in the Jinqiao Science Park, Shanghai.

The technology centre will feature state of the art analytical and lubricant development laboratory areas, a training facility and high-tech conference centre.

Mike Johnson, who leads the Castrol business globally said: "This investment reinforces Castrol"s commitment to its Chinese customers and consumers and is a key part of our strategic plan to expand our business in China. Together with our research and development centres in the UK and Germany, the new technology centre will give us a world class capability to meet the unique and exciting challenges of the Chinese market, both now and in the future. Shanghai was chosen because it is easily accessible for our customers and partners and we believe we can recruit talented scientists and engineers locally. "

The new technology centre will be fully operational by the end of 2010 and will initially employ up to 20 Chinese and international scientists and engineers.

Elsewhere, in the run up to this year"s FIFA World Cup in South Africa, in which Castrol Marine is a leading sponsor, the company has also become involved in sponsoring events attached to trade shows and conferences in London, Hamburg and Hong Kong.

A distinct football feel is promised with a number of surprise guests.

With World Cup fever reaching its peak, football closely mirrors a number of the company"s best practices and core beliefs, the company said.

?Castrol Marine values high product performance, efficiency and in-depth analysis of lubricant performance, in order to develop increasingly effective products. Similarly, success in football hinges on winning performances, maximum proficiency and detailed player analysis after a match to identify any weaknesses to be worked on and improved.? said Paul Lowther, global marketing communications manager for marine lubricants.

?Through our sponsorship of the 2010 FIFA World Cup?, Castrol Marine hopes to reach customers with an appealing and real connection between business and football,? he said.
