For the very first time, modern telephone- and Internet solutions are available to ships and offshore installations. - What we on mainland have taken for granted the last 10 ? 15 years, has not been available at sea until now. This is a giant step for welfare on board, says Lene Engebretsen, Marketing and Communication Manager in Intelecom.
Until now, most employees on ships and offshore installations have had to seek joint areas to speak on the phone with friends and family. Now, they will get access to Internet and telephone ? all in their own cabin.
- This gives our staff a whole new private zone. For the first time, they will get the possibility to surf online, speak to their friends and family at home, personal e-mail and chat from their own cabin, says Matt Arman, Senior Communications Analyst in Talisman Energy.
Talisman Energy is the first company at a Norwegian base, to implement this solution. From April 2010, Talisman-employees at the oil field Yme in the North Sea will get access to a whole new generation of communications systems.
First supplier in Norway Intelecom is the first supplier of the system in Norway, and is already experiencing great demand. Within 2012, they will be delivering the system to more than 100 boats ? worth 300 million NOK.
Solstad Offshore has already installed the solution at their ship Subsea7. In addition to Talisman Energy, Dof is another company to install this solution in 2010. Intelecom expect to implement this solution on 100 ships before 2012.
-These opportunities has been long awaited in this business, and makes our clients attractive employees, says Engebretsen.
The ships get Internet access via satellite, and the antennas on board have gyro stabilized VSAT and TV antennas so that the ship is online in any weather. Fixed installations get connected via high speed fiber optic lines and radio lines.
Better safety on board The communications solutions are integrated with the operating systems on board. Each cabin has a separate screen with interactive safety videos, maps of emergency exits, helicopter flights and HSE-information. Each cabin gets tailor-made information, the captain for instance, will have access to video surveillance of key installations.
