The future is bright
Turkish shipping has a bright future, but is still facing some difficulties in competing in the international arena, says one of the leading members of the community.
Metin Kalkavan, president of the Turkish Chamber of Shipping, believes that high interest rates in Turkish Lire as well as the strength of the country"s currency are negative factors, especially as far as the burgeoning shipbuilding sector is concerned.
Speaking on the eve of the first Turkish Shipping Summit, co-organized by TradeWinds and Seatrade, Kalkavan said he sees the future of Turkish shipping as ?very bright?.
A young ambitious generation is entering the sector, he said, but commented that the one element most of them are lacking is experience of a bad market.
Kalkavan believed that the bull market ?is not endless? and urged the younger Turks to look carefully at history ? especially of the 1980s.
