Merkel urges Turkey to open ports to Cyprus
German Chancellor Angela Merkel s Monday aid that in order to achieve progress in its EU accession talks Turkey should open its ports to ships and planes from Cyprus and help press Iran to stop its controversial nuclear program, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Mrs. Merkel said that Turkey's EU accession talks are "open-ended," but didn't repeat her long-standing suggestion to give Turkey a "privileged partnership" that falls short of full EU membership.
Germany is committed to reached agreements and "we are continuing the membership talks," she remarked before reporters at a joint press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Turkey's chief negotiator for European Union, Egemen Ba??? rejected the idea of a gesture from Turkey to open its ports and airports to traffic from Greek Cyprus without a move to end the economic embargo of Turkish Cyprus because there would be strong public opposition to such a unilateral step.
Merkel' insistance can be explained by German presence in Cpyrus fleet. After opening Turkish ports to Cyprus, both Cyprus and German will benefit and increase their shipment shares in region which is expected to be $3.5-4 billion with BTC pipeline revenues.
