A NEW ship agency firm dedicated to the grain and dry cargo sector has been formed by US agricultural processor giant Archer Daniels Midland and Norton Lilly International, writes Janet Porter.

Agri Port Services says that it intends to focus initially on ports in Panama, Canada and the US, providing customers with expertise from both the shipper-charterer and steamship agent-operator perspectives.

The new entity is to be headed by Dick Wilcox, who has more than 30 years" experience in the grain export industry.

In addition to building an experienced team at the company"s Destrehan headquarters in Louisiana, APS aims to utilise Norton Lilly"s network of wholly owned offices and experienced personnel.

The company expects to handle a minimum of 600 port calls during its first year in operation.

Norton Lilly is the largest independent steamship agency in North America. It services 70 ports through 39 offices around the US.

Archer Daniels Midland is one of the world"s leading agricultural processors. Its activities include converting crops such as corn, oilseeds, wheat and cocoa into food ingredients, animal feeds, fuels and chemicals. It has storage and processing assets in more than 60 countries.
