The Israeli shipping line received its first "mega-ship," the 8,400-TEU Zim Los Angeles, July 13 and will shortly launch the 10,000-TEU Zim Djibouti. The Djibouti will be twice the size of Zim's current flagship, the company said.
The two new box ships are the first of 12 the carrier will put into service as it strengthens its partnership with the Grand Alliance and prepares for an stronger flow of containers in an economic recovery.
?The world economy is changing, in particular the shipping market, and when the economic crisis is over we must be ready with the appropriate fleet to meet the world demand," said Idan Ofer, Zim chairman.
?The new mega-vessels are a major step forward for the company"s fleet," said Rafi Danieli, Zim's CEO. "They are significantly larger than the other ships we own and, as they can carry more containers, they are considerably more efficient. The delivery of the new vessels will lay the foundation to positioning ZIM as a leading company in the years to come."
Both vessels will serve with the Grand Alliance in the Pacific Northwest Service loop from East Asia to the U.S. West Coast and Canada.
